History of the King Cake
King Cakes are a large part of the Mardi Gras celebration and tradition in Louisiana. The King Cake is thought to have been brought to New Orleans from France in 1870. Crossed between a brioche bread and a French pastry, King Cake is an oval-shaped bakery delicacy that is as rich in history as it is in flavor. The small plastic baby is thought to bring good luck to the finder. When the baby is hidden inside the King Cake (we let customers hide their king cake baby!), who ever finds it is designated as the person to bring the king cake to the next Mardi Gras celebration. King Cakes are decorated in royal colors of PURPLE which signifies “Justice,” GREEN for “Faith,” and GOLD for “Power.” These colors were chosen to resemble a jeweled crown honoring the Wise Men who visited the Christ Child on Epiphany, or “King’s Day” - also known as “Twelfth Night”, or 12 days after Christmas Day.
We make our Lowder King Cakes from scratch using only the highest quality ingredients! Our Lowder King Cakes are made exclusively during Mardi Gras season only, starting every year on Jan 6th ("King's Day") until Mardi Gras day (which varies each year, but typically falls in February or March). We ship Lowder King Cake all across the US during Mardi Gras season too! Laissez les bon temps rouler!
